@tere: I love my iPad, its a great web surfing and content consumption device. I’d take it over a netbook any day, even an Apple style netbook. That said, a super slim MacAir notebook at 11.6″ is another story… with the specs I assume it will have (see my previous link to macrumors forum & other entries here) it is well above netbook capabilities.
And the current speculation is the price will be cheaper than current Airs… if around $1200 and fully specced it will be a bargain (unusual for Apple!).

@Leonardo: The problem with battery life on the Air is obviously the tradeoff between weight and battery capacity. To make it as light as possible it will neve have the same battery life as larger models, unless they come up with some super low-power features (or add to the weight of course). I’d love to see ~6hrs real use in a 2.6lb package, but I don’t know if it’s possible right now… although, if anyone can do it Apple can!
In any case, the rumor mill keeps spinning out new MacAir stories, so hopefully this is true and we will see an 11.6″ model by the end of the year. I’ll be first in line

Just noticing, the specs I present on this site are one year old. I surely have to take some time to upgrade not only to the specs of the new models but also the suggestion of spec for this small MBA. I might work on that by next week. But about battery, I expect no less than the promised 10 hours of the current models.

I love my Air. What I want is more battery life. When the Courier was first demo’d on Gizmodo, I new that’s what I wanted. And iPad, I think not.
But yeah, I’d like your MacAirNetBook idea, but if you think an Air get’s 5 hrs from the battery, you’ve got to be kidding. A real 5 and I’d be happy as I don’t quite make 3 as it is. Now 8, like I get on my 13″MacBook Pro, I’d love. And that is the one great thing about the iPad.

You lucky. I’m still trying to find someone here going to US so they could bring me an iPad. Hate the treatment given to us when the subject is technology; we’re the last ones for anything. In this case it’s worst since the new iPhone is to arrive before any iPad.

@Leonardo:
Well, I have a 15″ Macbook Pro now so I’d at least be able to avoid graphics card envy! But of course, I will play first with all the cool new technology anyway… to help ‘set it up’
I’ve taken my rumor mongering to the masses back at Macrumors forums:

I’d bet more on the 1280×800 or 1280×1024 since it seems MacOS X doesn’t work well under 800 vertical, but would bet on SSD only if Apple really wants a more expensive product (and I’d bet on more than $1399 with it). Batteries would have to be updated to at least 7h. That would influence memory and processor, I just don’t really know which would be more economic, i5 or i7. Or maybe they can addapt their A4 to it. 4Gb RAM is not out of the question and would be gladly welcome. I’d also love if it could come with a SD card port, like all MacBook Pros (have to update the site to recent models); if it’s gonna be expensive that sure won’t double the price.
And with that graphic card, I bet your girl will be the last person to use it, right?
On Jul 16th, 2010 at 6:55 PM
@Leonardo: Of course, lets wait and see but we can all hope it’s real.
And in the meantime, here is my new rampant speculation…
- 11.6″ screen, 1366×768
- Core-i7 640UM ULV (1.2Ghz, 2.26Ghz w/ turbo)
- 2Gb RAM
- nVidia GT 320M
- SSD only (no more crappy 4200rpm drive)
- 1x USB 3.0 port (please!)
- near full edge to edge keyboard
- more squared shape, ultra thin… like iphone 4, dell adamo
- 5hrs battery
- 2.6 pounds (1.18kg)
- $1,399 (sorry, but lots of goodies add to cost)
Possible differences & upgrade options:
- To Core i7 660UM
- To 4Gb RAM… or better, 4Gb as default
- Maybe 1280×800 instead… but 16:9 works better as more width for keyboard
- Maybe 330M, same graphics as Macbook Pros.
I hope this does happen… I want to get my wife a new computer soon, and would much prefer it be a Mac but even the current Air is too large. Hopefully will be the MacAir 11.6″… but if not the Lenovo U160 will likely be it. The U160 is similar specs to those listed above, at ~$1200 but without SSD or dedicated graphics…. so I think a $200 premium is about right for Apple pricing. Would love to see new MacAir at $1199 tho, and I know Leonardo would like it much cheaper… but not with those specs! It’s possible they could cut down specs to hit $999, but I would prefer better & more expensive.
On Jul 16th, 2010 at 6:10 PM
For sure, I don’t think (for now) that one would exclude the other.
iPads would need real USB ports and file systems before they could replace a notebook or netbook
Have you seen the rumour about a 11.6″ MacBook Air to be released by the end of the year?
Let’s not lose faith, we will soon get our hands on this toy.
On Jul 15th, 2010 at 11:39 PM
hi there your right and wrong yes you can buy a ipad for less money but ipad has zero usb ports i could use a usb or 2 usb ports soo i can have a opical drive for gaming
On Jul 15th, 2010 at 11:28 PM
Yes, I was very happy to see that. But I’d rather wait for something more solid/reliable than DigiTimes supporting the info to post some update here (the first source I heard this information from said DigiTimes hasn’t been much reliable nowadays). I’d say the battle has not been lost yet.
On Jul 15th, 2010 at 4:50 PM
Well… we might have the smaller MacAir this year, if some recent industry speculation is to be believed…
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/07/15/ipod_touch_with_camera_11_6_inch_macbook_air_expected_this_year.html
11.6″, Core-i low voltage… looks potentially perfect, and probably very close to the specs I laid out earlier.
Here’s hoping!

@Asmodean:
I also disagree with you about MacBook Air being a premium product. It’s premium only because of the price, not because of the resources it offers (it’s a different point of view); only those with lots of money to spend and no worries about not having resources would buy it as it is. To me, a premium product would be the MacBook Pro 13″ (comparing with Air screen size) as it has optical drives and even a SD card port. Some people like yourself don’t get used to 10/11″ screens but some do and those still want to use OS X on these small screens.
I won’t lie: I don’t get used to it too, but I need this kind mobility and don’t like Windows, so I installed OS X on my Lenovo S10 (I didn’t resist). iPad is not available here in Brazil yet and I’m sure it’s not for me right now. Lacks too much of what I need. Maybe I should start a campaign like this claiming for the changes I need on iPad too
Plus, we could hope they’d adopt the current batteries of MacBook Pro line on a 10/11″ model and we’d have 10 hours of mobility.
One more curiosity of mine: this week, the MacBook Pro line was updated but there was no announcement about updating the MacBook Air. Is it possible that Apple is ready to shut it down at last? Give it up for iPads?

@Leonardo:
In any case, it’s a great idea.
But I must emphasize that if the screen res is too small the user experience would suffer running OS/X or any ‘desktop’ metaphor based o/s. Apple would never settle for that, and I’d have no interest in buying it.
I also think Apple would not price it at or below the entry level MacBook… MacAir is a premium product, and to spec it too much lower than the MacBook just to get a low price would be a mistake.
A few years ago I bought a Lenovo U110 for my wife, which is a great compromise between portability and power/usability. It’s not for me as it’s a little slow (thanks to 4200RPM hard drive) and the screen is smallish at 11.1″, but usable thanks to 1366×768 resolution. My wife loves it… even though I’m trying to get her to go Mac, until Apple can come up with something of similar size/power there’s no way I can drag her away! And given that we paid ~$1700 for the U110, if an Apple could do the same for $1200 I’d buy it for her in a flash.
And while I was at it I’d buy a souped up 13.3″ Air with i3/i5 processor, 1440×900 screen, SSD, and 4GB of RAM for myself, for up to $2k.
btw. the U110 was 2.4lbs with tiny battery, 2.9 with decent battery. If Apple could do Air 11″ at 2.7-2.8lbs with 6hrs battery life I’d love it!

I remember the good daye of 12 inch PowerBook. It was one of the greatest computer I have ever used.
I hop the “MacBook Mini” will have USB 3.0

Maybe you’re right about weight and stuff but if the price is not low enough as suggested, it won’t be worth it. At least we proposed it more expensive that the most expensive iPad and didn’t include any 3G on it. Different products for different targets.
On Apr 14th, 2010 at 12:19 PM
No no no… just looked closer at proposed specs and have to disagree on numerous fronts.
* Screen needs to be a little bigger and high res… 1024×600 is a netbook. Yuk! I’d say 11.1″ and keep 1280×800 or similar with higher DPI. This would also allow very close to full-size keyboard and large enough touchpad, not cramped crappy netbook feel.
* Weight is unrealistic… maybe drop to 2.5 pounds but 2 = no way.
* Price… not gonna happen for $899… try $1199 and you may have a deal.
Also maybe they will up the ram and processor on 13.3 Air in next update… so 4Gb and 2.4Ghz for example. Then 11.1″ version could slot in at 2Gb and 2Ghz. Battery life longer than 5hrs would be nice.
On Apr 13th, 2010 at 11:38 PM
10″ is too small. 11″ is about right for a small light portable comp.
On Apr 13th, 2010 at 11:21 PM
One can easily buy an iPad, sure. But try attending a programming course using it? Or a design class? Or even write a paper?
Sure iPad seems to be selling well, but is it useful for all purposes? Can you do whatever you want with it? Anything you could do with a netbook?
I know Apple has a history of making only whatever mr. Jobs want and not what the market demands, but nobody is killed for trying.
On Apr 13th, 2010 at 3:55 PM
WHAT FOR??
Just get an iPad.
This is just another “we want Apple to make a netbook” argument. They’re not going to do it. ESPECIALLY with the iPad doing as well as it is.
Wake up.

About this website, it would be good to have “tell a friend” button. It would be better.

Macbook air is a netbook indeed, but paying for a smaller screen is a bad idea. I think it’s a great product the way it is.
On Jan 12th, 2010 at 2:05 PM
Gabriel, it makes sense if you think you are paying more ($300) to have less of a computer (i.e. no CD/DVD drive).
On Jan 12th, 2010 at 7:30 AM
a 10″ macbook air isnt a bad idea, but your “logo” (“If you can get an apple for $1, why pay $2 for half an apple?”) just doesn’t make any sense..
